1.0 Programme Description

This programme has both theoretical and practical components which is a requirement for a professional journalist. The programme is based on three academic years, with two semesters per year. Students are exposed to a total of 36 course units which include both the basic and core course units.  The basic course units are introductory course units offered in the first year whereas the core subjects are both practical and analytical offered through the second and third year of study. Students are required to undergo an internship programme at the end of their second year of study and also present a research report at the end of their third year.

2.0 Programme Objectives

The objectives of this programme are to:

1.      Enable the students to acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes and values in public communication in order to create awareness in society

2.      Enable the students to critically analyse contemporary issues in society and disseminate information through various mass media

3.      Equip graduates with the right knowledge and skills that should enable them to become more competitive, creative, and enterprising in both the local an international mass media environments

4.      Train students in appropriate technology to collect, process, store and disseminate timely information

5.      Train students to write accurate, objective, fair and balanced stories.

6.      Train students to be self-motivated in utilizing skills and knowledge acquired to develop mass communication careers and for self-reliance.

 

3.0 Programme Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this programme , successful students will be able to:-

1.                  Gather, write and produce accurate news stories, features and commentaries in both print and electronic media

2.              Analyze the ethical, philosophical, and legal dimensions of the media’s relationship with different stakeholders

3.                  Apply appropriate technologies to collect and disseminate information  in creative and entrepreneurial ways for both the print and electronic media
